There seems to be social phenomena afoot in our country involving middle class kids, not underprivileged kids, having children out of wedlock and then failing miserably as biological parents. I’m talking about “20 something’s”, not naive kids in high school. This breakdown is causing a spin off phenomena of responsible, “old school” grandparents who have not even reached the earliest eligibility ages for retirement or social security finding themselves parenting again for their grandchildren. It is the dynamic between the irresponsible and narcissistic 20-something “parents” and the responsible, 40-50 something grandparents, who have a track record of sacrificing for their children all their lives, that is bringing a new type of case to private investigators. The new type of case is the custody investigation being requested by the grandparent when the parents, usually unwed, are involved in criminal behavior or otherwise irresponsible to the point the child is endangered.

In the eight such cases I have undertaken in the past 18 months the majority of failed bio-parents are substance abusers with a failed work history who prefer babysitters and nightclubs to parenting and providing for their offspring. These are not the pulled up by the boot straps young parents who find a way to provide for the children while working hard to do so and abandoning their “fun years”, that we have grown to admire. These modern day parents are so bad that you can’t understand why they won’t voluntarily relinquish the kids…but they usually will not. Sometimes they seem to hold onto custody just to annoy the grandparents who would willingly take the child into a functional environment. Early into most of these cases, I have been quickly convinced that the children are not being well cared for and nurtured. However, that is not the hurdle. The hurdle comes in trying to convince an overwhelmingly overburdened bureaucracy in Arizona’s Child Protective Services (CPS) that the child should be removed. The default setting for CPS, at least in Arizona, is finding a way, any possible way, to leave the children with the bio-parent(s). The only exception to this is when the sole parent is arrested, and then it must be for violence, serious substance abuse or drug crimes. Even a backlogged CPS figures an armed robber, drug addict, marijuana farmer or alcoholic is not a good fit for a child.

The grandparents I have worked for have never called out of malice but only after having gut wrenchingly watched the ever deteriorating conditions the child must cope with, physically, emotionally or both. There are many kinds of abuse. Some are in the form of neglect and some in physical assault. The gross neglect seems to be the most prevalent in these cases. CPS is not going to take a grandparent’s word that something foul is afoot, especially when CPS is programmed to leave well enough alone. The grandparents I have worked for have been squeaky enough wheels to cause CPS to investigate; at least enough, that they have found and acknowledged problems with nutrition or hygiene. The parents have been counseled and given classes on feeding a 6 year old or changing a diaper and then left again to their own devices.

In most cases the failed parents simply re-locate themselves where either the grandparents or CPS, or both, can’t find them. Our most recent case stemmed from credible rumors a grandparent picked up on regarding their adult child’s lifestyle that was endangering their child. In this case we had to first find the place of residence, establish probable cause that drug trafficking laws were being violated from the residence in which the pre-school child was living and then provide the evidence to the police. We were fortunate in accomplishing all and in working with very dedicated and caring police officers who were incensed about the child living in a home that was the base for criminal enterprise.

A police raid resulted in the arrest of the parent and her boyfriend, and the removal of the child. CPS has given the child to the grandparent for now but provides every possible opportunity for the criminal parent to prove they are rehabilitated and able to get the child again. It will be an uphill battle for the offending parent and a nerve wracking ride for the grandparent. If it were a perfect world the parent would indeed rehab and become a good caring parent for the child. Maybe we’ll get lucky.

Child neglect investigations, contracted by the grandparents, are something with which we have become only too familiar. If you are a grandparent in this position, please let us help.

Applied for a job lately? The forms authorizing background checks are everywhere — and for good reason. After some famous frauds have come to light, companies are hiring private detectives to complete an investigation of new hires, just to make sure that the applicants are who they say they are.

So who are some of these famous folks who defrauded their companies — and even the rest of the world.

1. Most well known, is Frank Abagnale, Jr., whose life story was the basis of the movie Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardio DiCaprio. Abagnale impersonated a doctor, a pilot and lawyer, forging his credentials every time. He lived all over the country. He was sentenced to three prison terms, and now works with the FBI to stop fraud.

2. Another well known name is Kenneth Lay, the former CEO of Enron. Enron participated in multiple industries, including electricity, natural gas, pulp and paper companies and communications. Fortune magazine named Enron “America’s Most Innovative Company” for six years in a row. At its height, the company employed more than 20,000 people. That all ended in 2001, when the company’s stock collapsed, plunging from $90 a share to mere pennies. Fraudulent accounting practices were revealed in an investigation. Kenneth Lay sold more than $70 million of his own Enron stock right before the collapse. Kenneth Lay was convicted in 2006 on 10 counts of securities fraud. Kenneth Lay died of a heart attack before he served his prison sentence.

3. The former CEO of Bausch & Lomb, Ronald Zarrella, claimed that he held an MBA from New York University. He kept this on his official biography for more than 10 years. In actuality, he started the MBA program, but never finished. As part of his separation from Bausch & Lomb, he returned a $1.1 million bonus in January 2008.

4. The financial industry isn’t the only place people have defrauded their employers, only to rise to the top of the organization. In 1999, The Wall Street Journal revealed after a few background checks that the CEO and President of Lotus Corporation, Jeff Papows had lied about his PhD from Pepperdine University. He had also claimed to be a captain in the military. His record, however, revealed that he was a lieutenant. He resigned from Lotus.

5. The internet isn’t all about computer hardware, software and other technologies. Online shopping includes more than just the big box stores. In 2005, Etsy entered the world of e-commerce. A visionary site, Etsy.com features handmade and vintage items for sale. The site allows local artists and craftsmen to feature products in an affordable environment. Etsy was co-founded by Rob Kalin, the now former chief executive officer. He stepped down after it was revealed that he had forged some of his credentials so he could attend design classes at MIT. He attended Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts program solely on the strength of a portfolio. Kalin has earned a degree from New York University in the Classics.

It’s all too easy to list a school and a degree on a resume, no matter whether it was earned or not. No wonder companies are using Phoenix private detectives to conduct background investigations before making hiring decisions.

When you lose something in your house, like your keys or the remote control, searching becomes infuriating because you know unequivocally that this item could not have just vanished. You retrace your steps, you quiz others who might have seen the item in question, and you peer under the sofa. When a person goes missing it can seem impossible to track them down. The good news is that people, like your keys, do not typically vanish without a trace. There are simple steps that can help find missing or hiding people from Scottsdale Arizona to all of the way across the country.

1. The first step in finding a missing person may involve filing a missing persons report with the Scottsdale Police Department, however the police are very limited in what actions they are legally allowed to take to find someone. People, especially adults, with no disabilities, medical conditions, or who are not believed to be victims of foul play have every right to go wherever they please under the law. If a person is located as a result of a missing persons report, the police department will notify the party who filed the report and ensure the safety of the missing person, but they cannot reveal the missing person’s whereabouts without their consent.

Here is a list of police stations in Scottsdale Arizona:

Police Headquarters
8401 E. Indian School Road
Scottsdale, AZ 85251
480-312-1907

District 1
7601 E. McKellips Road
Scottsdale, AZ 85257
480-312-3701

District 2
3700 N. 75th Street
Scottsdale, AZ 85251
480-312-2716

District 3
9065 E. Via Linda
Scottsdale, AZ 85258
480-312-5025

District 4
20363 N. Pima Rd.
Scottsdale, AZ 85255
480-312-8800

2. The Maricopa Superior Court System has a comprehensive and searchable database of court cases heard in the county. If a case has been heard against the missing person it can provide valuable information as to where the person is currently or possibly a next step in finding someone who has seen the person in question. The records are updated daily as cases are heard in the county. You can search the Maricopa Superior Court Docket here: www.superiorcourt.maricopa.gov/docket

3. The internet can be an incredibly valuable tool for narrowing down a search for a person who is missing or in hiding. With only scant pieces of information it can be possible to locate addresses, aliases, current or past employers, or photos. Social media can be a place to find information about the missing person’s friends and relatives and possibly even about the person themselves. Even someone trying to hide is bound to have a photo snapped every now and then.

4. Friends and family members usually know better than anyone else where a person is likely to lay low. No one knows a person like their family. It is also unlikely that someone will be able to go far without some kind of support to help them on their way. It is easy enough to run, but avoiding all contact with support groups is difficult even for those most eager to stay hidden.

5. A person on the run will more than likely contact someone they know, but those in touch with the person in question may be hesitant to reveal that detail. Often it may be possible to glean important clues about a missing person simply by observing those people they are most likely to contact. Surveillance is the most direct and often the most effective way to track down a missing person.

It can be difficult to find someone who may not want to be found, but it is not impossible. There are several valuable resources in and around Scottsdale Arizona to aid in the search for anyone anywhere.

Becoming an Arizona private investigator, for the most part, won’t parallel a television show with car chases, fights in an alleyway, or following some client’s wife wearing a low-cut dress for days on end. However it can be exciting, and the pay isn’t bad either. But if you’re in business for yourself trying to keep costs down, it will be up to you to locate and prepare legal documentation paperwork for your clients and the courts, which will be a necessity.

That’s where a legal document preparation company can provide a quick, affordable legal document service that you need for small claims, unlawful detainment, writs and subpoenas, and more. As an Arizona private investigator, that helpful document parachute floating down over your head is your answer to being professionally prepared for your clients. Look folks, attempting to create “do-it-yourself” paperwork can be a daunting task. Formatting documents with the correct information should be left to the professionals at an Arizona legal document preparation company.

A legal document company will assist you in creating the finished paperwork you need by using the specific, detailed information you give them. Since they have the necessary tools and smarts you don’t, the process will be completed in a quick and timely manner, and best of all, your documents will have a professional touch that tells your clients that you’re a professional.

So in the final analysis, why not just skip the headache and frustration of trying to figure out how to do legal paperwork yourself that the court will accept. One error in a court action or service of a subpoena could be a real setback for you in terms of reliability as a private investigator. Here is the bottom line. Using a legal document preparation company is simple and efficient, and for you the PI, affordable and a time saver. You give the paralegals the information, they do the work so you don’t have to, and you save hundreds of dollars, compared to using the services of an attorney or other private law firm. Nobody can do it better than a legal documentation preparation company.

Everyone likes a good “who-done-it” story, whether it’s by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or James Patterson. The detectives made famous by these authors have astounded readers for decades with their investigative skills.

Although Sherlock Holmes, private investigator, is a fictitious character, he is based on a real person, a Frenchman who was an ex-soldier, criminal and privateer by the name of Eugene Francois Vidocq. Vidocq was flamboyant in his style, and very much the showman. Vidocq started his private detective agency in 1833. He enjoyed going “undercover” in disguise to catch the wrongdoers.

Vidocq actually met Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and this is how Doyle came to know about him. Holmes decided to use Vidocq as his model for the character, Sherlock Holmes. Vidocq was responsible for the creation of a number of investigative techniques used today. Invisible ink, unalterable bond paper used to make checks, plaster casts and ballistic tests are just a few of his contributions.

In 1852, a policeman with the Metropolitan Police in England retired from the force to open a private detective agency. His name was Charles Frederick Field. He also was to meet up with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle wrote a number of books using Field as the private investigator in his stories.

In the 1850′s, the first detective agency in the United States was founded by Alan Pinkerton. Known as the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, the logo of the agency is an open eye,the motto, “We Never Sleep.” Pinkerton was a pioneer in modern police work and private investigative technique. During the Civil War, he worked for the Union, his agents involved in military intelligence duties. A good friend of Abraham Lincoln, Pinkerton’s military agents became the precursor of the U. S. Secret Service, based on Lincoln’s bidding.

Later in the 19th century, Pinkerton men were used to keep strikers and pro-unionists out of factories, paid for by the business owners. Alan Pinkerton was well liked and respected all across the country. When the FBI was being formed in 1909, Alan Pinkerton’s plan of business for his agency was used as a model.

Competition in the world of business is fierce in this struggling economy. As a result, there are more instances of underhanded dealings in an effort to undermine another business or make more gains through inappropriate means. Corporations in Arizona do have someplace to turn when foul play is suspected by others in the business. No company, large or small, should accept inappropriate activity without a fight. Hire an Arizona private investigator today and employ surveillance investigation for hard proof about any suspected malfeasance or fraudulent business activities.

Incidents may have occurred with competitors that are beyond coincidence. There may be instances that appear to be sabotage, deliberate acts that lead to disaster in business dealings. This is where an Arizona private investigator can effectively gather information, acquire proof, and give clients what is necessary to prosecute a client in court. Surveillance investigation is methodical and effective. It is an excellent approach and will get the job done.

No one should be a victim of fraud or malfeasance, in which another corporation purposely takes harmful action against its competition. It is vital that anyone who suspects any such negative activities have occurred does something about it. There must be an example made of anyone who chooses the wrong path in an effort to make his or her business look better. A company should succeed based on its own merits, not dismantling the competing businesses.

This can also be said for private individuals who feel they are victims of malfeasance by a corporation or suspect fraudulent activity. People can certainly hire a private investigator to gather information through Arizona surveillance investigation to get definitive proof about a company that is involved in wrongdoing against the American public. There is help in any instance when illegal actions are being performed by businesses. From timeshare scams to illegal investment of shareholders’ money, a private detective can acquire the proof to nail a company to the wall if illegal activities have been taking place. Fellow business owners and the American public can take a stand, stop illegal activity and seek compensation for their losses.

Arizona Poverty Level is on the Rise

The Associated Press is reporting that poverty in Arizona and throughout the United States is on track to rise to its highest level since 1960. Many economists are predicting an increase in the poverty rate. Americans across many social-economic groups are becoming more financially vulnerable. The economy is not only affecting people without jobs and the poor, but the weak economy is also affecting workers and families who are underemployed. Suburban families who are sliding from “making a decent living” to “struggling to make ends meet” are part of the ever-decreasing Middle Class.

It seems that more and more individuals and families throughout Arizona who were once considered to be part of the middle class are experiencing true poverty and poverty level situations and living conditions. The increase in families living below the poverty line will lead to more consumer bankruptcy filings and additional debt relief efforts by many people who are experiencing financial difficulties.

Poverty is the “lack of the usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions.” The government’s definition of poverty is based on the total income earned during the year. A certain level, (which changes every year), is set as a measuring stick for what is to be considered poverty, (for example, in 2012 the poverty level was set at a yearly income of $23,050 for a family of four). If a family is earning less than this level, they are determined to be “living in poverty”.

As we mentioned, poverty levels are increasing to levels that haven’t been seen in decades. The rise in the number of poverty cases among former “middle class” families is a frustrating issue for families throughout Arizona. Families who are now below the poverty line are concerned about what needs to change to get them back above the poverty level and the families who are still part of the ever-shrinking middle class wonder what preventative measures they must take to stay above the proverbial “poverty line”.

Some bread-winners have had success in their careers making a decent living and making a comfortable life for their families. When the economy takes a turn for the worse, when businesses are seeing decrease in sales, and when companies are laying off employees, times that were once manageable for these bread-winners, have become difficult and depressing. Life for “middle class citizens” as we know them, has become a fight and a struggle to survive and maintain. The on-going recession and the economic problems in Arizona have left some of the working class with broken spirits, and broken financial situations.

For the person who loves crime programs on television, reading mysteries and has a keen mind with attention for detail, obtaining a private detective license may be the right field. Being organized, having good powers of observation and being able to be assertive with a cool head are other requirements. If those traits match an individual’s personality, it’s time to dig deeper into getting a private investigator license.

Online Courses

With the introduction of the internet, online opportunities have exploded in most fields, including becoming a private detective. The beauty of taking courses on the web is flexibility, being able to complete course work at one’s convenience while working around a busy schedule that may include caring for a family or going to a job. In addition, online courses tend to be less expensive than traditional colleges or universitities. When choosing to train online, all materials are generally included and students will learn the essential skills to become a private eye. For example, learning how to interview others is essential as well as how to do an effective stakeout that will not bring attention to or endanger the individual who is investigating. Knowledge of surveillance methods is key as well as different resources to be used when searching for someone. Research and an understanding of a variety of crime situations are both important for a private detective as well.

Criminal Justice Programs in College

People who need a physical location for class can also sign up for criminal justice programs in a community college or four-year college to learn vital information that will be helpful in becoming a private investigator.

Be an Apprentice in an Agency

Individuals can also apply at detective agencies for a job or as an apprentice to learn the essentials and get experience. In order to get a detective license in the state of Arizona, a person needs to have had at least three years of experience as a private eye or in some government capaciy that involves investigation or working for an investigator. By working for an investigator for three years or more and having proof from the employer, plus having a clean criminal record, a person can obtain a license to be a private eye from the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Once all documentation has been received and approved, a person is ready to receive an Arizona private investigator license and begin a practice.

When people suspect others of violating their trust, they may find it necessary to retain private eyes. This professional can set up surveillance of the suspected individuals and find out if they have indeed betrayed the agency’s clients. Detectives use long-range cameras and video equipment that can be set up from a considerable distance, yet still capture the photographic evidence to prove a person’s disloyalty. Sometimes detectives don disguises in order to follow their targets from a safe distance without being suspected. Arizona surveillance investigations come handy for clients who suspect an employee or a customer of stealing a company’s money or property, parents who suspect their children’s mother or father of drug dealing, and families who suspect their children of engaging in illicit activities. Many courts allow people to use evidence gathered from surveillance in their legal pursuits against such individuals.

A Phoenix private detective agency gives people the closure and evidence they need to be able to carry on their lives and make important decisions about their futures. Common reasons to retain such services include:

Locating lost people

Discovering cheating spouses

Finding hidden assets

Performing background checks

Establishing surveillance

Clients who are unfamiliar with how to begin their searches and those who do not have access to documents, court records, and other forms of paperwork often find it necessary to work with a private investigator. This professional provides clients the information they require to pursue legal action against guilty parties, hire new employees, or be reunited with people who have been absent from their lives.
